Wizard of Oz

(Not the lead blogger this week, but here some quick thoughts...)

I have been enjoying the Wizard of Oz immensely. I find myself becoming extremely engrossed in the reading, more so than with the Alice in Wonderland, or Briar Rose. The writing seems more descriptive and engaging than the other texts. Although the story is fantastic, it is more accessible than Alice, because the characters seem to posess more human-like qualities. I have been amazed by the detailed description of places in the story--especially the Emerald City. This has been my favorite read so far, and I am looking forward to finishing the book.

I know what you mean about this book being a wonderful read. I have always enjoyed this book. I actually have the whole series all 14 books if you like wizard of oz you'll like those too. I understand and agree about the book being more accessible then Alice although I love that book too. But this one is more real life based. I love all the descriptive in the story too; it makes it easy to see the different locations in your mind's eye and makes it easy to picture yourself there. That is crucial to me for reading and really getting into a book. I love the emerald city and the description in the book of it. I love how everything is emerald. When the book says “They walked over a pavement of the same green marble, and where the blocks were joined together were rows of emeralds, set closely, and glittering in the brightness of the sun. The windowpanes were of green glass; even the sky above the City had a green tint, and the rays of the sun were green.” You can really imagine this place where everything is green. It just brings back memories of reading and loving this book as a kid.

I was the lead blogger and had trouble signing in to write the main blog, so I am just going to write my respose as a comment. I really enjoyed reading the first half of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The author did a great job in describing The scarecrow, The tinman and the Lion. Such as describing what they are missing, such as the scarecrow doesnt have a brain, and you can tell how they want what they dont have and the reasons why since they are just as determined to go see Oz just as much as Dorthy is. The tinman's story was interesting how he wants his heart back so he can love this Munchkin girl again. This book is really easy to follow and easy to read. One thing happens after the next in a clear order. For example Dorthy meets the scarecrow, then the tinman, and then the cowardly lion, and then they proceed on with their journey to Emerald City. The pictures in the book represent what you read which is nice, even though they are black and white, they were still nice to look at while reading through. The drawings of Dorthy make her look only a couple years old! In the movie, she is much older looking. I am enjoying this book more than Alice and Wonderland. I feel like Alice was a book meant more for young adults to understand and that The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is meant more for children since it is more clear and easier to read. I do agree that the Wizard of Oz has more real life elements to it than Alice and Wonderland. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is my favorite book we have read so far.

I too enjoy reading this book. I find the reading to go very smootly. I however find it hard to determin which one I like better. As a child I didn't read these books much but watched the movies and gotten the storied read to me. I like that I am reading them now because am going into them with a great insight. I have been able to see the similarites and differences between the movie and the book. I agree that the book is very decriptive. This becomes important when reading books such as the wizard of OZ. I am very glad that I have been reading this book.
